"Matinee had their audience clapping until their hands stung"

Matinee Ensemble: Superhero Saves The Stage

**** 4 STARS

Matinee, an Israeli based theatre group, showcase a slick and humorous performance. With four short stories and a thrilling finale, Matinee entertained from start to finish.

Incorporating easily recognisable characters into their close-to-mime-but-not-quite stories – including Superman, Inspector Clouseau and King Kong inspired creations – makes it easy for the audience to get into the plots quickly. Throughout, the acting seemed well rehearsed with polished choreography as the crew gave a slick performance. Each section was well acted and with touches of humour sprinkled throughout it’s the cast who are remembered as the stars of the tales, not the characters.

Comedy is found in a variety of manners – whether it’s in the movements of the actors, the KAPOW!-style sound effects or the overall effect of the Hollywood parodies – and there was never a story or a scene that I wanted to end quickly.

The quintet – made up of four men and a delightful sole woman – showed a wide range of acting talent and produced a soundtrack without the need for any fancy equipment or much in the way of props. The majority of the hour was without dialogue – and the little dialogue that was used was spoken in a Simlish style tongue – meaning extra pressure was focussed on the actors’ physical performances. The cast passed with flying colours and by the end Matinee had their audience clapping until their hands stung.

"a lively, entertaining piece... great comedic effect"

The Stage reviews Matinee

Hollywood blockbusters come to the live stage thanks to this slick Israeli troupe of mime artists.

They have rehabilitated the form, adding a spot of dance and a pantomime to create a lively, entertaining piece which plays with a whole slew of different film genres to great comedic effect – deconstructing the forms and challenging the audience's expectations.

Over an hour, a superhero action movie and an Inspector Clouseau-style cop caper are topped by a big martial arts blockbuster – complete with all the modern use of wires and cod-philosophical cliche which dominate the form. As a frothy dessert, the five strong troupe create mash up dance and horror, all to Michael Jackson's Thriller.

The trick here is to get back to basics. Black, skin-tight outfits ensure that facial expressions are crucial. The minimal use of carefully chosen props and the occasional extra piece of costume to help distinguish a lead character gives an extra punch. Otherwise it is all down to movement and expression.

Yinon Shazo as the Clouseau character and Dani Brusovani as the king of kung fu are particularly well observed, but in such an ensemble piece where all five can be involved in making a single character work, it is wrong to pick out individual performers.

On Wednesday I was treated to Israeli mime show Matinee, who dazzle with their physical capabilities.

Then there is Matinee - a group of mime artists with a Hollywood parody show. You often see them dressed as superheroes running around Edinburgh.

A great show for the kids, as well as any film enthusiasts out there - of which there are plenty.
